Champlain Valley Compost Co., in Charlotte, VT, has been producing Farm-Crafted Compost™ in collaboration with several Vermont farms since 1996. Using 100% dairy and horse manure, we create optimum conditions for beneficial compost organisms to transform these raw ingredients into a superior soil amendment. And unlike some agricultural composts which are simply "aged" manure, the "turned-windrow" composting method we use ensures the high temperatures and optimum conditions needed to kill weed seeds and pathogens. Having a pleasant, earthy aroma, Farm-Crafted Compost is ideal for vegetables, flowers, trees, shrubs and lawns. It is also approved for use on organic farms by the Vermont Organic Farmers (VOF) certification organization. Learn more or request a price quote.
Topsoil Plus - Raised Bed Mix™
Topsoil Plus - Raised Bed Mix™ is a weed-free, ready-to-plant blend of Farm-Crafted Compost, sphagnum peat moss, virgin silt, agricultural-grade granulated charcoal, and a proprietary blend of locally-sourced rock dusts (to provide broad spectrum micro-nutrients). This product is specially formulated for filling raised beds to grow vegetables and flowers. Although the Raised Bed Mix contains about 50% compost by volume, because the nitrogen in compost is released slowly over multiple growing seasons, each cubic yard also comes with 1 lb of Pro-Gro organic fertilizer (made by North Country Organics) to ensure there's sufficient nitrogen available for fast growing large plants that require lots of nitrogen. This fertilizer should be mixed into the top 4 to 6 inches at an application rate of 1 to 2 cups (or 5 to 10 oz) for each 4 ft x 8 ft (32 sq ft) raised bed. Topsoil Plus - Raised Bed Mix™ is approved for use on organic farms by the Vermont Organic Farmers (VOF) certification organization. Learn more or request a price quote.
Topsoil Plus - Lawn Mix™
Topsoil Plus - Lawn Mix™ is a weed-free, ready-to-plant blend of Farm-Crafted Compost and high-quality screened silt. As legions of our loyal customers have already discovered, Topsoil Plus - Lawn Mix™ provides a perfect planting media for creating or patching lawns because the compost provides lots of high quality organic matter and plant nutrients while the silt offers optimum water-holding capacity. Topsoil Plus - Lawn Mix™ is also approved for use on organic farms by the Vermont Organic Farmers (VOF) certification organization. Learn more or request a price quote.

A Note About Persistent Herbicides
As you may know, a few years ago there was a problem with persistent herbicides being found in compost made here in northwest Vermont. And although these herbicides were present in extremely low concentrations, they could still affect the growth of certain sensitive garden plants including tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, beans, and peas. And while only a relatively small number of Champlain Valley Compost Co. customers reported these problems, as a precaution we now conduct grow tests (aka "bioassays") to ensure that our compost and topsoil supplies are free of potentially damaging levels of these herbicides. As you can see in this photo, these grow tests indicate that our 2015 supplies are ready to go !!!
